Dr. Moinul Islam Zaber

Founder & Director

Dr. Moinul Islam Zaber. is a Professor at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Zaber is a Data scientist and Man Machine Interconnection Specialist, whose research focus is on the use of data analytics and design thinking for public policy. He co-leads Data and Design lab at the Department of CSE, of the University of Dhaka. The lab conducts a number of exciting innovative research evolving around BIG DATA that required extensive use of machine learning, data mining, applied statistics and proposes the solutions that are refined through the learnings of theories and practices of human-machine interaction. He was also a Research Fellow of LIRNEasia, a Sri Lanka based regional ICT policy and regulation think tank. At LIRNEasia, Dr.Zaber conducted research related to spectrum management and policy. He is also affiliated as a Research Scientist with the Chalmers University, Sweden. At Chalmers University he has conducted an extensive data-centric research on the impact of Broadband speed variability on quality of life.

He received his doctorate in Engineering and Public policy from  Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. In his research, Dr. Zaber used techno-economic analytic methods to understand issues related to spectrum management, competition due to technology and regulation in the marketplace. Dr. Zaber is well published in peer-reviewed journal papers and have showcased his research in the number of acclaimed Engineering policy conferences.

Dr. Amin Ahsan Ali

Director

Dr. Amin Ahsan Ali is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). He completed his Ph.D. in 2014 from the Department of Computer Science, University of Memphis. He worked in the mHealth Systems Lab and the Center of Excellence for Mobile Sensor Data-to-Knowledge. He worked on the inference of health risk behaviors (e.g., Stress, Smoking, Drug use) from data collected from wearable physiological sensors in the natural environment.

His current research interests include Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Natural Language Processing. He obtained his MS and BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Dhaka. Before joining IUB, he had been working as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Dhaka from 2006 – February 2018.

Dr. Sarker Tanveer Ahmed Rumee

Associate Director

Dr. Sarker Tanveer Ahmed Rumee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his Ph.D. in 2017 from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), Texas, USA. At UTA He worked in the Software Engineering Research (SERC) Lab. His work area was on software security: especially on securing mobile operating system (Android) to identify and prevent sensitive personal data disclosure.

His current research interests include Program Analysis/Synthesis, Data Analytics and Adversarial Machine Learning. He obtained his MS and BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Dhaka. He joined University of Dhaka in 2009. Before that, he worked at the Department of CSE, State University of Bangladesh from August 2008 to June 2009.

Md Abu Sayed

Research Manager

Md Abu Sayed is an M.Phil student at Computer Science & Engineering Department, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh since 2016. He has his masters from Sweden on Electronic Government. He has been working as a researcher & consultant in the field of ICT for Education for more than 10 years including eLearning, mLearning, Education Management Information System (EMIS) & IT enabled teaching-learning (Just in Time Tutoring). He has actively worked with more than 50 schools in Bangladesh to develop & implement Education Management Information System (EMIS) to provide educational information instantly using SMS, email, printed material to the parents for better monitoring & guidance. He has previously worked in interactive lecture delivery methods using mobile SMS and web-based application for both distance education & face to face classroom situation. He is currently working to develop a platform to help students as and when required for their lessons using smartphone app & web application from experts. The platform is developed as a pilot and tested in two educational institutions in Bangladesh with a small group of students. The result so far showed the positive impact of such system in teaching learning and student feedback management. JINTE is currently available at the Free Basics platform of Facebook in Bangladesh to use the system free of cost form mobile devices. He is planning to trial run the JINTE model in a large group of students from a different socioeconomic background in Bangladesh. His goal is to develop a crowd-sourced learning environment involving teachers & students remotely and mitigate the digital divide.

Dr. Ahmedul Kabir

Senior Research Fellow

Dr. Ahmedul Kabir is a distinguished scholar in the field of Computer Science, having completed their Ph.D. at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts, USA, in 2018. His dissertation, titled “Mixed Bagging: A Novel Ensemble Learning Framework for Supervised Classification based on Instance Hardness,” reflects his deep expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). This expertise is further evidenced by their academic background, with both a B.Sc. (Hons.) and an M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Dhaka.

He is actively engaged in research that explores practical applications of AI and ML across various domains, including Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and Software Analytics. His work is characterized by a commitment to applying cutting-edge technology to solve real-world problems. Over the years, they have successfully led and contributed to multiple research projects backed by significant grants.

In 2022-23, they were the Principal Investigator for a project aimed at enhancing the efficiency of assembly lines in Ready-made garment factories through a low-cost vision-based system, funded by the University Grants Commission, Bangladesh. Earlier, in 2021, they served as the Co-Principal Investigator for a project developing a patient care robot with automated path planning, demonstrating the practical implications of Zero Shot Learning, supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Bangladesh.

Dr. M Ashraful Amin

Senior Research Fellow

Dr. M Ashraful Amin finished his PhD degree from City University of Hong Kong in 2009 with outstanding student award. Same year he joined the department of Computer Science and Engineering of Independent University Bangladesh. Currently he is working as Associate professor at the department. His teaching interest is mostly in the area of Machine Learning and pre and post processors for pattern recognition research. That ranges from linear algebra, probability & statistics, numerical optimization, neural networks & fuzzy systems, deep learners, genetic algorithms, and image processing & computer vision. Dr. Amin has supervised about 30 undergraduate and 20 graduate research and thesis work. He has published more than 90 peer reviewed research papers in SCI indexed journal, conference proceedings and books. Four of his research works received best paper award at international conferences. He established the computer vision and cybernetics research group (www.cvcrbd.org) at the Computer Science and Engineering department of Independent University, Bangladesh. he specializes in data collection protocols, data standardization visualization and analytics. He is a member of the IEEE and IEEE SMC society. He established the robotics and IoT research lab at IUB that has produced a prototype Mars Rover that became 10th in 2017 and 6th in 2018 among all participating university at the university rover challenge (http://urc.marssociety.org/).
His current research involves use combination of machine learning & data analytics and IoT & Robotics in health-education-agriculture.

Dr Amin Masud Ali

Research Fellow

Dr Amin Masud Ali is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Jahangirnagar University (JU), Bangladesh. He completed his BSc and MSc degree from Jahangirnagar University. Later, he obtained an MA degree in Economics from Andrew Young School of Policy Studies (AYSPS) of Georgia State University, USA, under the Fulbright Scholarship Programme. Dr Amin has completed his PhD in Development Policy and Management from the Global Development Institute (GDI) of The University of Manchester, UK. His thesis investigates the impact of local government decentralisation on poverty reduction at the subnational level of developing unitary countries.

His research interest is in development economics,  political economy, and public policy. His teaching experience includes Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics, Trade Theory, and Bangladesh Economy. He also served as a visiting faculty at North South University and Independent University of Bangladesh.

A K M Mahbubur Rahman

A K M Mahbubur Rahman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Md. Ariful Islam

Research Associate

Md. Ariful Islam is an accomplished academic and researcher in the field of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering. As of April 30, 2023, he holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his B.Sc and M.Sc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Dhaka.
His research interests span a wide range of areas, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Bio-robotics, Signal Processing, and Robotics in Blue Economy. He has been actively involved in research, and his contributions are evident through numerous publications in reputable journals. Notable contributions include research articles on topics such as robot-assisted training for children with autism spectrum disorder, chronic kidney disease prediction using machine learning algorithms, and marine renewable energy harnessing for sustainable development.
He has actively engaged in various projects, including “Modelling of Hybrid Electric Vehicle for Low Emission” funded by Dhaka University Centennial Research Grant and “Unraveling Bacterial Resistance Patterns: Deep Learning Approaches for High-Resolution Drug Target Profiling” funded by the University Grants Commission.

Md. Sadat Mursalin

Md. Sadat Mursalin Chowdhury is a Senior Manager, IT Systems at BRAC University. He is RHCSA & RHCSE Certified and LEAN Six Sigma Black Belt Certified. He has over thirteen years of hands on experience in Networking, System administration and as a System Analyst. He has successfully completed many projects with open source application and integrate it with both Windows and Linux system. Implement & Migrate (almost 13000 users with data) the AD (Active Directory) in University Campus which is running currently, also implement system monitoring. Firoza Tabassum Tuhi is currently pursuing her M.Sc. degree from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, at BRAC University. She completed her undergraduate studies from the same institution. She is involved with research on ‘Complex Network Analysis’ which is focused on the transportation systems of Bangladesh.

Firoza has nearly 6+ years of experience in Software Testing field and she is currently employed as Software Engineer (QA) at TigerIT Bangladesh Limited. Previously, she has also worked at Accenture Bangladesh and BRAC IT Services Limited.

Humaira Islam

While pursuing the Master’s Degree from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at BRAC University, Humaira Islam developed her interest in Machine learning. This led her to get involved with the research of “Complex Network Analysis” which is focused on the transportation systems of Bangladesh.

Humaira obtained her Bachelor Degree from American International University- Bangladesh (AIUB).At present, she is working as a “Business Development Executive” in Ujala Paints Industry. Previously she worked as a “Teaching Assistant” in AIUB.

Md. Mehedi Hasan

Research Assistant

Md. Mehedi Hasan is currently pursuing an M.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering at the prestigious University of Dhaka. He holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering from Daffodil International University and is an active member of the esteemed Data and Design Lab.

Previously, Mehedi served as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Daffodil International University. He also contributed significantly as a member of the research team at the DIU NLP and Machine Learning Research Lab, where his focus was on various research projects related to Bangla, including speech processing and speaker classification. Mehedi’s expertise extends to image processing, acquired during his tenure at the Apurba-DIU Research and Development Lab, where he contributed to a Bangla OCR project. Notably, some of his research findings have been successfully published in international conferences and journals.

His research interests span a wide range, encompassing Natural Language Processing, Conversational Agents, Speech Classification and Recognition, Data Science, and Image Processing, with a specific emphasis on the Bangla language. Beyond academia, Mehedi has demonstrated his proficiency in competitive programming and has showcased his skills by developing several noteworthy projects using languages such as C++, Python, Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL during his undergraduate program.

Murshed Al Amin

Research Assistant

Murshed Al Amin is a Machine Learning Research Assistant at the Data and Design Lab, where he and his team are dedicated to tackling complex challenges at the intersection of AI and Energy in Bangladesh. Their work primarily revolves around understanding power quality and conducting load forecasting. In addition to his research role, Murshed has also contributed to academia as a lecturer at the Canadian University of Bangladesh, where he imparted knowledge in Computer Science to undergraduate students.

Previously, Murshed ventured into the entrepreneurial world with his ed-tech startup, Shikhao. This initiative was aimed at providing on-demand tuition services to university students, particularly during their mid-term and final exam preparations. Although Shikhao eventually ceased operations, it marked a significant phase in his professional journey.

Murshed’s research interests are diverse yet interconnected, focusing on Natural Language Processing, responsible and explainable AI, and the Ethics in AI. He is also intrigued by the Theory of Computation, exploring its various facets in relation to artificial intelligence.

Kazi Shadman Sakib

Kazi Shadman Sakib is a dedicated Computer Science and Engineering student pursuing a B.Sc. at the University of Dhaka. As a Research Assistant in the Data and Design Lab, he is actively involved in an intriguing project focused on maximizing the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) within the domain of Educational AI chatbots. Mashiat Amin Farin

Mashiat Amin Farin is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering at University of Dhaka. Her research interests span Blockchain, Web3 and AI. Besides working for Data And Design Lab, she interned at Grameen Communications as a Blockchain R&D intern and at Coding Objects as a Data Science intern.  Mashiat has showcased her versatility through impactful projects such as a decentralized system for the Road Transport Authority, a Decentralized healthcare system and a fire prevention system. The projects were finalists at the National Blockchain Olympiad 2023, winning awards in various hackathons, and securing a bronze medal at the International Blockchain Olympiad in 2022. Istiaq Ahmed Fahad

Istiaq Ahmed Fahad is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering at the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) from the University of Dhaka. He possesses a profound passion for Python and is deeply engrossed in exploring the realms of machine learning. I am Khandoker Ashik Uz Zaman, a researcher passionate about Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and modern technology. He accomplished some projects related to Machine Learning recently of which thesis topic was on developing a complete system for Bangla OCR.
